AGITO

MOMENTS — NIGHT

A night by the fire, when words grow fewer

Watch a campfire and, somehow, you run out of things to say. On a trip there are nights when that feels just right. Apart from the glow of a phone, only the flicker of the flame marks time. A night you go by AGITO, buy firewood, and light a fire after dark.

Places suited to this time

Gear that goes with it

Fire pit

Open fires are banned in most places, so a pit is essential. One that folds compact is easy to pack.

Firewood bag

Buy it locally as a rule. It's often sold at roadside stations and facilities.

Firestarter + lighter

Newspaper works too, but a firestarter is surer and easier.

Leather gloves

For adding wood and adjusting the fire. Cotton work gloves catch fire, so they won't do.

Lantern

Firelight alone leaves your hands in the dark. One that stands on a table is easy to use.

Trip tips

Check the facility's rules in advance

No open fires, fire pit required, fire bucket required — conditions differ by facility. Check when you book.

Buy firewood locally

Many roadside stations and RV parks sell dry firewood. If you bring your own, use a sealed bag to keep insects out.

Put the fire fully out

Douse it with water and check until no smoke rises. Then leave only once it's cool enough to touch with a finger.
