Off the grid on a hidden lakeshore
Oku-Biwako is the innermost part of Lake Biwa, the inlet at its northern end. The hamlet of Sugaura, clinging to the shore, was once a "hidden village" set off from the outside by four-legged gates. The roughly 18.8 km Oku-Biwako Parkway threads a ridge of cherry and maple to the overlook at Tsuzurao-zaki.
What kind of place
Sugaura is a hamlet tucked quietly at the base of a peninsula jutting into the lake. Four-legged gates still stand at its entrance, and it carries a distinctive history of self-governance. Less a tourist spot than a place where life lived alongside the lake simply remains.
The Oku-Biwako Parkway is a roughly 18.8 km drive along the northern ridge of the lake. In spring it becomes a tunnel of cherry blossom, in autumn of maple, and from the Tsuzurao-zaki overlook you look down on the lake's north end.
Being far from the busy east and south shores, the nights are quiet and dark. Park the car and savor minutes at a time out of phone signal. A place where that itself becomes the point.

About 1.5 hours from the garage in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto (toward the north shore, as a rough guide).
Best seasons
Cherry-blossom spring and autumn color are the parkway's best. For quiet, choose a weekday.
Notes on staying
Sugaura is where people live. Park and stay overnight only at designated places. The parkway is closed to traffic during certain nighttime hours (check first).
