A night in a town that lives on the water
At the far north of Kyoto, on the eastern tip of the Tango Peninsula, sits the town of Ine. Along about 5 km of bay, more than 230 funaya — garages for boats — line up. Built right at the water's edge, these houses form an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The "time of living here," invisible on a day trip, is something you taste by staying the night.
What kind of place
An Ine funaya is built with a boat garage facing the sea on the ground floor and living quarters above. The houses line the bay, the sea just beyond the front door. It's a town where life bound to fishing still goes on.
By day it bustles with visitors, but as the day-trippers leave in the evening, the town returns to the sounds of daily life alone: the creak of mooring lines, the smell of supper, windows lighting up across the water. Ine as a "place of living" rather than a tourist spot can only be seen from this hour on.
Come by car and there's no curfew, no checkout. Park on a rise overlooking the bay and there's your room for the night. In the morning you wake to the engines of boats heading out to fish. Simply "being there for a night" becomes the way to spend time in Ine.

Meet the morning at eye level with the sea
The funaya sit right at the water's height. A morning that wakes you at the level of the waves is something you can only have by staying.
See the boathouses from the sea
About 25 minutes on the Ine Bay sightseeing boat. From the water, you grasp at a glance how 230 houses ring the bay to form the town.
Stop by the sake brewery near the harbor
At Mukai Sake Brewery, right beside the sea, taste a sake you can only meet here — precisely because it's a night without driving.
